TEACHING PLAN

CURRICULUM

SMA LAB SCHOOL.jpg

Curriculum Merdeka is an educational approach introduced in Indonesia that focuses on giving students more flexibility and independence in their learning. It moves away from rigid structures and emphasizes a more student-centered approach, where students can explore subjects based on their interests, abilities, and real-world applications. The curriculum encourages critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving skills rather than just memorization of facts.

How Curriculum Merdeka Helps SMA Lab School Students in Learning English Effectively?

At SMA Lab School in Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia (UPI), which is known for its commitment to innovative teaching, Curriculum Merdeka significantly enhance students’ English learning experience in several ways:

Personalized Learning Paths

  • Students can learn at their own pace, focusing on English skills they need to improve.

  • More room for project-based learning, discussions, and interactive activities rather than just textbooks and grammar exercises.

Real-World Application

  • The curriculum encourages communicative English by emphasizing speaking, listening, and writing skills in practical situations.

  • Students can engage in presentations, debates, storytelling, and collaborative projects that mirror real-world English usage.

Emphasis on Critical Thinking and Creativity

  • Instead of rote learning, students are encouraged to analyze texts, express opinions, and engage in discussions.

  • Creative writing, role-playing, and storytelling help students internalize the language naturally.

Project-Based and Collaborative Learning

  • Students work on group projects where they research and present in English, improving both language skills and teamwork.

  • Activities such as creating digital content (blogs, videos, podcasts) in English make learning more interactive and relevant.

Assessment Beyond Tests

  • Less focus on standardized assessment and more on performance-based assessments, such as presentations and writing portfolios.

  • Encourages a growth mindset, where mistakes are seen as part of the learning process rather than failures.

Teacher’s Role as Facilitator

  • Teachers act as mentors rather than just lecturers, guiding students to explore English through discussions and interactive tasks.

  • Differentiated instruction allows teachers to adjust lessons to fit students’ individual learning styles.

TEACHING PLAN

Every week, I need to create at least one to two semi-detailed lesson plans for grade 11 students that I have handled. I must always submit it to my coordinating teacher prior teaching. It was very important that my coordinating teacher will see it, so that, if there were some mistakes or changes needed it will be recognize immediately. When it comes to the format, I used the template and outline of lesson plan in the Philippines. I provided the platform below to access my semi-detailed lesson plans and the detailed lesson plan that I had used on my final demonstration teaching. The followings were the things that I consider in tailoring my lesson plan that I used in the Lab School:

  • Identify the topic that you will be teaching.

  • Write SMART objectives that will ensure higher order thinking.

  • Create an activity that will engage students to participate.
